UK Destroyer deployed to Falklands

Tensions between Argentina and the United Kingdom are set to rise as it has been revealed that HMS Dauntless will replace HMS Montrose on a tour of duty around the Falkland Islands. HMS Dauntless is a much more powerful ship that was commissioned in 2010; it is much larger in size and as a destroyer has a greater weapon capability. To mark the 30th anniversary of the start of the Falklands War this year, Jeremy Browne a Foreign Office Minister will visit the islands on a goodwill visit.
In December 2011, the South American trading blockade was imposed on the Falkland Islands which prompted the Foreign Office to issue a statement saying “We are very concerned by this latest Argentine attempt to isolate the Falkland Islands people and damage their livelihoods, for which there is no justification”.
The Argentines have continuously been determined to take over the Islands which they see as belonging to them, and it could very well be that they are increasing their attempts to isolate Britain and the Falklands in order to exploit defence cuts to the British military. Prince William is due to go to the Falkland Islands in the coming months to complete his helicopter rescue pilot training, a move which the Argentine government call a “provocative act”.
During a recent Parliamentary Question, David Cameron accused Argentina of colonialism over their actions in regards to the Falklands. The angry Argentines responded by condemning the comments made by the British Prime Minister. The Chairman of the Defence Select Committee, James Arbuthnot warned that “Argentina should be in no doubt – we will not let the Falkland Islands go. If the Falkland Islands were by any chance to be retaken by Argentina, we would take it back. Argentina should be in no doubt of that at all.”
It is right that the Ministry of Defence are sending HMS Dauntless to the Islands albeit to replace a ship that is stationed within the region. The Falkland Islanders want to remain British and as long as they want to remain part of the United Kingdom we should stand up and fight for them.
